If you ever find yourself in the south of Norway I would highly recommend to travel to Helleren in Jøssingfjord. Though the location is a bit remote and difficult to get to without car, it is a beautiful ride down over the overhanging rock with a nice view over the fiord.
The houses are kept restored and there is no entrance fee. The houses are even unlocked so you can enter them if you want to. From the car park to the houses there is a very short walk, but as you can see on the photo above there are a lot of rocks surrounding them. This include the way to the houses, but there is a small road to walk comfortably on.
What I did not expect when visiting the houses was that there was even laundry hanging outside to dry. It really was like icing on a cake and a nice little surprise, that I now has spoiled for you all. If it is still there that is.
Norway is a rough country to live in during winter season, even more so back in the day. Therefore many people built their rural houses in places that would help them with shelter for these periods. Helleren is one of these houses that took advantage of the overhanging rock.

Where to travel from?
If you are staying in Stavanger or Kristiansand it is pretty much in the middle and it would make for a nice day trip. This would however include a lot of driving, but would be ideal if you were driving between these two cities.
If not Flekkefjord is not far from Helleren and it is a cute small town that is possible to stay at for a night. It is also a popular place to visit for boat owners during the summer.
When to visit?
As winters get a lot of snow in Norway and the roads get icy, I would suggest visiting during late spring, summer and early autumn. As long as you avoid the snow it should not be a problem. Though you can still reach Helleren, remember it is located at the fot of a mountain and you will have to drive down to it. Making it dangerous if the roads are too slippery.
